The impact of COVID-19 has been felt by everyone, including but not limited to local businesses. We’re seeing an increase in calls to support local by ordering takeout or delivery from your favourite restaurants, or shopping from local retailers.
Unfortunately, while local businesses have been hit hard by the effects of the global pandemic, they are not alone. As families and individuals adjust to changing household budgets, many people are not necessarily in a position to spend extra money to support local businesses.
Fortunately, there are plenty of non-financial ways to show your support, as well as ways for those who are able and comfortable to financially contribute to the local economy. Consider one (or more!) of the following ways to support your favourite local businesses:
1 – Follow and like your favourite local restaurants & businesses on social media.

2 – Sign up for your favourite businesses’ email newsletter. You’ll help them to grow their subscriber list while also staying up to date on their operations.

3 – Leave a positive online review to support the business when things are up and running again.
These are just a few of the ways we can all work together to support local businesses as they adapt to new ways of operating. If you are in a position to do so, consider showing your support for your favourite local businesses by doing the following:
4 – Order pick up and/or delivery from one of the many local restaurants, markets, breweries and cafes who have adapted their businesses to offer options like doorstep drop off, contact-free take out and more.
5 – Instead of purchasing groceries from the supermarket, consider purchasing your weekly groceries from an online farmers’ market, or save yourself some time and purchase prepared frozen meals or meal kits locally.
6 – Purchase items you might normally buy online or from big box retailers locally. Instead of buying new jeans from a company in the States, shop for clothing locally. Instead of, consider, and rather than purchasing coffee at the supermarket, buy your coffee from a local supplier.
7 – Purchase a gift card from your favourite local restaurants, breweries, cafes or retail shops to use either when they reopen or to give as a gift!
